Maddie has gotten overly involved in her position as basketball team captain, and Liv has taken notice and considers making new friends at school. When Liv finds out that Maddie has arranged for a fellow student to befriend her, she cuts school with a more troublesome student against Maddie's discretion and gets in trouble to which Maddie takes blame. Meanwhile, Joey is given a state-of-the-art smartphone and takes on a position in the mall food court in an effort to pay the bill.
